Carnival Cruise Lines Cruise Reviews

These boisterous ships woo party animals, as well as fun-loving families and singles, with constant entertainment (think poolside hairy chest contests, after-hours comedians, buckets of beer, plenty of activities for kids) and increasingly impressive food, including burgers by Food Network star Guy Fieri. Carnival has begun to host onboard concerts by big-name performers — including Jennifer Hudson, Chicago, Jewel, and Leann Rimes — on regular sailings and has partnered with Dr. Seuss Enterprises for themed story hours and kid-friendly "Cat in the Hat" brunches.

pure ecstasy

small verified icon Verified Review | Ship: Carnival Ecstasy | Sail Date: Apr 13, 2014

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time on the carnival ecstasy. We set sail April 14,2014' and we got back on April 18,2014. By boyfriend's birthday was the 17th. We went scuba diving in cozumel. Wow! What an experience. The exotic fish we encountered were amazing.it was so romantic holding hands exploring the gulf. The staff was super friendly and the room service was wonderful. I would definitely do this again. Thank you carnival.

Not great for 18- and 19-year-olds; geared more to younger and older passengers

small verified icon Verified Review | Ship: Carnival Inspiration | Sail Date: Apr 13, 2014

I took 3 young ladies, between 18 and 19 years old, for the 4-night cruise to Catalina & Ensenada to celebrate the end of 13 years of Girl Scouting. Our cabin was clean, although the extra bedding was stained so we had that swapped out on our first afternoon. Staff is amazing on the boat and incredibly helpful and friendly.  I was very disappointed that there wasn't a real steel drum band aboard - just a DJ on the main deck playing music at incredibly loud volumes.  The girls weren't into the loud DJ/canned music experience and all the screaming kids and smokers on that deck. They went to find a quiet spot to sunbathe and got booted out of the 21-and-older deck only to discover that the "Adults Only" jacuzzi on the main deck was filled with little kids in swim floaties, splashing and yelling while their parents looked on.  How come THEY didn't get booted out? There are clubs on the boat for the real little kids and for kids 15 to 17 years old. There is nothing for young people 18 to 20, so for the extra "Fun Day at Sea," my group spent the day in our cabin, doing calculus homework and reading instead. Thank goodness for Catalina and Ensenada, where they could get out and do interesting things away from the hoardes of little kids running up and down the halls, banging on our door playing "ding dong ditch," etc.  I probably should've spent all our cookie money on a long weekend at Disneyland, instead.

Great for travelers with kids -even five in a cabin!

small verified icon Verified Review | Ship: Carnival Imagination | Sail Date: Apr 13, 2014

I wanted to take my four granddaughters on their first cruise, and since we couldn't get two adjoining cabins, I took a deep breath and trusted our cruise agent's advice that five of us could fit in one cabin.  With a queen bed,two flip down upper bunks and a trundle, it really did work, and with a little bathroom scheduling, I couldn't have been happier with our four day "slumber party".  I was a little concerned that during Spring Break the kids would be exposed to rowdier co-cruisers than I would have liked, but that wasn't the case, and we really enjoyed our fellow cruisers.  The Carnival Imagination water park was a huge hit, and the kids spent hours there daily.  Carnival staff were excellent about gently monitoring the ocassional lines for the water slides, and access to the buffet soft-serve ice cream bar, made the whole set up every kids' dream.  (Mine too - I got to sit and read on deck, occasionally calling out encouragement to my little water-sliders)  Our cabin steward, Jay, was excellent, and we even had him autograph our towel-folding book, since his works of towel art were a big hit.  Food, especially in the dining room, was excellent, and we never waited in lines for anything.  The Hasbro Game show in the evenings was a great hit with the kids, though the Diva's show, while full of talented singers and dancers, was a little "one-note - mostly intensly sung and danced unfamiliar songs, bland costumes, and not the homage to famous Divas as it was billed.  Ok, but not up to other cruise shows I've seen.  In spite of the cruise advice to never ever book a shore cruise apart from the ship, we signed onto a shore-based horseback/La Bufadora/shopping trip in Ensenada, and could not have been happier with it.  Our travel guide, Jesus, was an amazing fount of information about Mexican history, local culture, and even fishng and agriculture.  Since we were never further than a 45 minute cab ride from the ship, we were certainly in no danger of being left behind, and paid $35 per person for an experience that would have been over $100 each if booked on-board.  Our dining table mates included the zip line experience for an additional $20 each and my regret is that we didn't do that too.  Over all, our experience on board and on-shore was outstanding, and Carnival really has it dialed in, even for groups like ours - one grandmother and four kids.  Highly recommend.

Best Vacation Ever

small verified icon Verified Review | Ship: Carnival Sensation | Sail Date: Apr 13, 2014

This cruise was one of my best!  Carnival staff was professional, courteous and accommodating.  My only concern was sound barriers.  Theh Carnival Sensation had many minor passengers on board as it is Spring Break season.  Oftentimes, I heard plenty of noise from children running through the halls. Otherwise, I had a fantastic time!

good 3 night cruise, just as expected.  food is good as always, and so is service.  Not liking the new flooring in the bathroom.  it was all cracked and some nastly liquid was seeping up we had to leave a towel on the floor and it had brown water stains where the cracks in the flooring were.

Fun on the ship but shore excursions are hard to grasp

small verified icon Verified Review | Ship: Carnival Paradise | Sail Date: Apr 10, 2014

The days at sea are fun - lots of good food, music, shows, swimming, sunshine and sea view. Staff are attentive and helpful. My daughter (4) loves the kids camp room on the ship. My son (6) basically swam all the time and if he was not swimming, he had ice creams with his friends on the top deck. However, the day on Cuzumel, the island, just sucks. We went to the assigned deck on time but waited at least half an hour to get off the ship. Once on land, we found ourselves in a crowed small shopping mall. So many people just stood there waiting for excursion groups or basically were too hot to go anywhere or do anything else. We had registered a submarine trip on ship so we found the group, went on a boat, then a submarine, but hadn't seen any colorful fish or coral reef because they had been destroyed so badly, there were basically nothing left to be seen. It was a waste of money($99/adult, $49/child). After that we wanted to go to a beach but there wasn't any beach at walking distance. We asked a man who stood nearby where to find a beach for the kids, he said we had to take on another excursion activity which includes snorkeling, otherwise no way to go, and he started bargaining with us.  We gave up, just went back to ship. Later we got to know that you could take a 10~15 minutes taxi to a nearby beach park, and to find a taxi, you should just walk out of the mall area. That man just lied to us! Can you believe it? Because of him, we went on a cruise vacation but didn't step on a beach, that is just ridiculous! Of course, it's basically our own fault. We should do more research on shore excursions before we go. And that's my advice to you, if you plan to go. Thanks!

Great Staff, Smokey Ship

small verified icon Verified Review | Ship: Carnival Sensation | Sail Date: Apr 10, 2014

First, note that the staff and crew were both great--the staff was the high point.  The problem was that a number of the cabins on the Empress Deck *reeked* of smoke becasue of a smoking lounge overhead.   When we requested a cabin change, the staff was very good about helping us, but after a night in the cabin below the smokers, I'd already started coughing enough to drive me to the doctor the day after my return. No doors separate the smoking areas from the rest of the open atrium area, so that smokey smell exists in many corridors/stairwells.

6th time on carnival was not the charm!

small verified icon Verified Review | Ship: Carnival Splendor | Sail Date: Apr 09, 2014

Being our 6th time traveling on Carnival, we knew what to expect.  We unfortunately, were extremely let down by our expectations.  Ship was extremely dirty to me and service at dinner was less than you would expect.   They constantly messed up our orders and kept on coming back to table telling us 1 more minute-  25 minutes later, we got food and again it was wrong.  The buffet was terrible.  We weren't offered the usual spread - and surprise, they no longer serve lunch in the dining room - as they call it brunch.  Kids were allowed within the casino and sitting to sit at the bars - when I say kids, I am talking around 6-12 years old.   I don't know how the parents allowed their children to be around the smoking and the gambling, but Carnival should not have allowed it.  Never saw the cruise director until the last day of the cruise getting off of the ship.   Overall, would not cruise Carnival again as they are definately lacking what they used to offer.
