Beautiful Cruise, Clean Ship

Ship: Westerdam
Sail Date: Jun 08, 2013

Overall, the cruise was beautiful! We had sunny weather most days, even in Glacier Bay. The first full day of cruising was at sea, and it was really rough. If you get motion-sick, prepare yourself with Bonine, get up early and get out of your room and get to the Lido deck for some light food. Other than that first day, the waters were pretty smooth sailing. If you are a gluten free passenger, they do have gluten free food, but each area handles it different, and it can be a pain. The best thing to do is go to each dining are you will be participating in and talk to someone in charge. In the Lido, look for the chefs with the tall hats. If you do this early on, it will save you a lot of time, and you will get to enjoy more foods. In Juneau, we really enjoyed the $8 roundtrip bus ride to Mendenhall Glacier. Great way to spend the afternoon. In Sitka, we walked the city street and looked in the shops. In Ketchikan, we shopped. Tongass Tradiing is worth saving your buying ...

North to Alaska for the First Time

Ship: Westerdam
Sail Date: Jun 08, 2013

Because my husband and I live 15 minutes from Port Canaveral, Florida, we frequently cruise the Caribbean but had never been to Alaska before. Holland America is one of our favorite cruise lines because of their service, consistency, and value. When we finally decided to take an Alaskan cruise, we found the Inside Passage 7-day from Seattle the best value offered at the time, and we were not disappointed. We spent a couple of nights in Seattle first and were charmed by the friendliness, cleanliness, history, and beauty of that city. The itinerary of the cruise showed us a sampling of the Alaskan wilderness and lifestyle, and we are already planning a longer, more extensive cruise and land package for next summer.

Cruise to Alaska in June

Ship: Statendam
Sail Date: Jun 02, 2013

Mostly a good cruise. Comfortable room. Good food. Pleasant dining companions. Good staff. Liked the excursions. Major negative - our stateroom flooded when a pipe burst somewhere down the line. We were out of our stateroom for a 1 1/2 days.

the shutdown

Ship: Oosterdam
Sail Date: Jun 02, 2013

We must begin by stating that we are not new to cruising having used Royal Caribbean and Carnival in the past. This was our first experience with Holland and also Alaskan cruise. You not have a bad cruise to this destination as the environment is beautiful. Holland American seemed to do many things right, like as a smooth embarkation and debarkation process. The food was lack lusture and the biggest issues was the staff approach to portions. This was further complicated by the language barrier which is present with most boats. They could improve by asking how much you want and changing servers as they appeared to be in different to many quest request staterooms were fine. The activities were par for most boats but geared towards an older crowd and were mid fifties. This is not a boat kids limited things for them to do. The boat seemed to close down about 11:30pm daily ad I felt cheated as they started to prepare for next weeks quest during day five. We couldn't find a drink on the fina...

3 Star Mariner Not Impressed

Ship: Westerdam
Sail Date: Jun 01, 2013

Not as classy as they used to be. No Chocolate Extravaganza. No Ice carvings. No Baked Alaska Parade with waving napkins. Drinks not as fancy but more $$. No little toiletries in balcony room . No boarding greet with champagne . No namecards on doors. Overall decor of ship very ordinary , where there used to be museum quality pieces. I realize "you cant go back"... but it just doesn't feel like the Holland America Style that was so unique. Looks like they are trying very hard to SELL you art and wine and spa and junk jewelry. The people who buy Shore Excursions have priority over others when disembarking ..when there is so little time in most ports anyway. Specialty Restaurants not much better than regular dining venue. Sorry not up to par anymore.

Eurodam was not what I expected

Ship: Eurodam
Sail Date: May 31, 2013

By many cruise critics, Eurodam is rated between 4.5 and 5 stars. Myself and my wife have been on over 20 cruises, many of them over 10 day cruises and on 8 different cruiselines (Costa, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, Princess, Norwegian, Celebrity and Holland America). Comparing all of these cruises, I rate Eurodam 3 stars. Being one of their newer, larger and "spacious" ships, I was very disappointing at the available public and open spaces. They filled their entire ship with staterooms. We always stay in a balcony stateroom and Eurodam's was definitely the smallest room I have ever seen. Food was terrible. 98% of the food menu items are the same in the dining rooms and buffet. There was limited choices of food and most of the time tasteless. We ate at some of their specialty (with fee) restaurants and in addition to the food not being very "special", it was also in very small quantity. After eating at a specialty restaurant, we always visited the buffet to "complete" our d...

Holland America Inside Passage Cruise

Ship: Oosterdam
Sail Date: May 26, 2013

My family just returned from our cruise and we loved it! Beautiful scenery, wonderful food, and great on-board entertainment. The ship staff was very attentive, and we all had a super vacation. The only disappointment was with a couple of the excursions we booked through Holland America. The Mt. Roberts Tramway was overpriced since we could have bought our own ticket at the pier for $10 instead of the $30 we paid in advance. Also, don't waste your time and money booking the excursion to see Fortress of the Bear. It was a shabby, rinky-dink enclosure with 5 bears inside. Not worth it. Otherwise, every other excursion was just as we hoped. Would definitely recommend this trip to others!

Wonderful, relaxing trip!

Ship: Oosterdam
Sail Date: May 19, 2013

This was a very special trip that my brother and I made with our 86 year old mother. I had cruised before but never with Holland America. I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the ship and the service we received. We enjoyed each port and we went on the Seaplane over the Misty Fjord in Ketchikan. It was the highlight of our trip! We would have liked to have had more time in Ketchikan as it was a really fun little town. This is the perfect ship for older folks as it is fairly easy to navigate with walkers and wheelchairs. It is a smaller ship than I have previously been on and I didn't find that much to do although we weren't interested in many of the activities such as the art exhibit or jewelry sales, etc. We did attend the shows in the Vista Lounge and they were very good. We mostly ate in the Lido Restaurant which is a buffet and the food was good and plentiful but at times it was very crowded and impossible to find a table. The crew was outstanding ...

Overview of Holland America Line

What We Love

  • Well-trained crew.
  • Complimentary culinary classes and demonstrations on board all ships.
  • Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruise/tours (private train from Anchorage to Denali) are the best in the industry.

What To Expect

  • Fellow Passengers: Holland America's traditional, classical style of cruising attracts couples ranging in age from mid-twenties to retired. During school vacation periods, a growing number of families with children sail, especially in Alaska.
  • Atmosphere: Low-key and reserved, HAL's ships have large, tastefully decorated public rooms, art and antiques that pay tribute to the company's history. They are not known for nightlife.
  • Staterooms: Inside & outside cabins (169–267 sq. ft.); balcony cabins (213-379 sq. ft.); veranda suites (506–590 sq. ft.); penthouse suites (1357 sq. ft.).
  • Dining: Lunch and dinner are served in the two-floor main dining room with a choice of single, double, or open seating (don't miss the Indonesian dishes served in the Lido restaurant). While it's not gourmet, HAL's cuisine is satisfying and plentiful.
  • Entertainment: Las Vegas-style shows with lavish costumes; movie theatre with complimentary popcorn, cabaret, piano bar, and casino at night. On Eurodam and Rotterdam, giant LED screen on deck for open-air movies. This is not a late-night ship.

The Fine Print

Alcohol Policy: Wine and champagne are allowed on board. A corkage fee of $18 applies.

Dress Code: "Smart casual" (slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men, and casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women) and two formal nights (suit or tux for men and and evening/cocktail dresses for women).

Gratuities: $11.50 per person, per day is charged to onboard account and covers all service staff.

Children's Program: Supervised activities for children aged three to seventeen; fewer options than Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Smoking Policy: Smoking is forbidden in cabins but allowed on private balconies; permitted in a few designated areas aboard the ship.

Onboard Activities: Computer and digital photography classes. “Culinary Arts Center” with guest chefs, cooking demonstrations and classes; fitness center and spa.
