Cruise dress code

Dress codes on cruise lines are often confusing to cruisers because each line has a different policy. As a general rule, you cannot wear tank tops, caps, bathing suits, shorts (and often jeans) in the dining room or specialty restaurants in the evenings on most cruise lines.

But what is considered formal attire? What’s casual? Do I need to dress up? If so, how many nights? To dispel the enigma, we’ve broken down the dress codes for individual cruise lines.

Cruise Line

Policy

Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara is generally “resort casual.” There are no formal nights.
Men: “Resort casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, sportswear and button-downs for men.
Women: “Resort casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival's evening dress code is typically "cruise casual.” There are typically two “cruise elegant” nights during a 7-day voyage.
Men: “Cruise casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men. “Cruise elegant” means suit or tux for men.
Women: “Cruise casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women. “Cruise elegant” means cocktail or evening dresses for women.

Celebrity Cruises

On a 7-day voyage, two formal nights are scheduled. "Smart casual" is suggested on other nights.
Men: For formal nights, men are expected to wear a suit or tux. For “smart casual” nights, slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs are the norm.
Women: For formal nights, women are expected to wear evening or cocktail dresses. For “smart casual” nights casual dresses, skirts and blouses are the norm.

Costa Cruises

Costa’s evening dress code is typically informal "resort casual" dress in public areas on most nights. There are two formal nights per 7-day voyage.
Men: “Resort casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men. Formal nights mean suit or tux for men.
Women: “Resort casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women. Formal nights mean cocktail or evening dresses for women.

Crystal Cruises

There are two cruise formal nights on a 7-10 day voyages, while the other nights are "resort casual.”
Men: “Resort casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men. Formal nights mean suit or tux for men.
Women: “Resort casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women. Formal nights mean cocktail or evening dresses for women.

Cunard Line

On a typical 7-day cruise, expect two formal nights and five informal nights.
Men: On formal nights, a suit or tux along with a tie or bowtie are expected. On informal nights, a jacket is required but a tie or bowtie is optional. 
Women: On formal nights, evening/cocktail dresses are expected. On informal nights, cocktail dresses/casual dresses or skirts with blouses are expected.

Disney Cruise Line

On three and four night cruises, there is one semi-formal night. A 7-day cruise features one formal and one semi-formal night.
Men: On semi-formal nights, men are expected to wear a jacket. On formal nights, men are expected to wear a suit or tux.
Women: On semi-formal nights, women are expected to wear a dress or pantsuit. On formal nights, women are expected to wear evening or cocktail dresses.

Holland America

Holland American’s evening dress code is typically “smart casual.” There are usually two formal nights on a 7-day cruise.
Men: “Smart casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men. Formal nights mean suit or tux for men.
Women: “Smart casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women. Formal nights mean cocktail or evening dresses for women.

MSC Cruises

MSC’s evening dress code is typically "casual resort wear" with two formal nights on 7-11 day cruises.
Men: “Casual resort wear” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men. Formal nights mean suit or tux for men.
Women: “Casual resort wear” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women. Formal nights mean cocktail or evening dresses for women.

Norwegian Cruise Line

NCL does not schedule formal nights. “Smart casual” is suggested for dinner on all evenings.
Men: “Smart casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men.
Women: “Smart casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania does not schedule formal nights. “Smart casual” is suggested for dinner on all evenings.
Men: “Smart casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men.
Women: “Smart casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises schedule two formal (black-tie) nights on a 7-day cruise. They also schedule “smart” and “evening casual” nights.
Men: Black tie or formal nights mean a tux or dinner jacket for men. “Smart” attire means a jacket and tie for men. “Evening casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men.
Women: Black tie or formal nights mean an evening gown or cocktail dress for men. “Smart” attire means cocktail dresses for women. “Evening casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women.

Princess Cruises

During the day, casual attire is the norm. Most evenings, the dress code is "cruise casual." Two “cruise elegant” evenings are scheduled on a 7-day cruise.
Men: “Cruise casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men. “Cruise elegant” means suit or tux for men.
Women: “Cruise casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women. “Cruise elegant” means cocktail or evening dresses for women.

Regent Seven Seas

Regent Seven Seas does not typically schedule formal nights on cruises under 7 days, and most evenings are “elegant casual.” Cruises of 15 nights or more will have two Formal Optional nights.
Men: “Cruise elegant” means slacks, khakis, jeans, and button-downs for men. Formal optional nights mean tux or suit.
Women: “Cruise elegant” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women. Formal optional nights mean evening gowns or cocktail dresses for women.

Royal Caribbean

On a 7-day cruise, most evenings are "cruise casual,” with two formal nights.
Men: “Cruise casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans and button downs for men. Formal nights mean a tux or suit.
Women: “Cruise casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women. Formal nights mean an evening or cocktail dress.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar suggests an “elegant casual” attire for evenings. There are no formal nights.
Men: “Elegant casual” means slacks, khakis, jeans and button downs for men.
Women: “Elegant casual” means casual dresses, skirts and blouses for women.
